Drinking habits across the ages

Evidence suggests soda consumption was ubiquitous across social classes in the early 21st century. Generally this is assumed to be evidence that municipal drinking water was unsafe. 
That’s exactly how “medieval people only drank ale because you couldn’t drink the water” sounds to me.
